About Nisha
Nisha Moodley
As a child I was often sick. When I was with my Scottish-English grandmother, green Dimetapp, ham & cheese sandwiches and Guiding Light saved the day. At my Indian grandmother’s house it was another story – poultices, root soups, camphor and Lord Krishna. The only child of an Indian father and a Caucasian mother, I was raised with both eastern and western traditions of food and healing. By my early grammar school years, I had developed an intense interest in plants and healing, and by age 14 I was a certified Reiki energy healer and a self-proclaimed master of the Ouija board. My spiritual life was taking shape.
Being creative and self-expressed in high school was not easy for me. I was teased for being “hyper” and dressing “differently”, and in an attempt to fit-in I began squashing my natural talents and creativity. I began abusing my body; I smoked, drank, did drugs and ate junk. I was a “lucky skinny girl” who stuffed my face with potato chips to avoid my emotions. I kept it all together by having a bubbly personality, a great job, lots of friends and well-developed ways of hiding my true feelings.
Nobody knew that I was an emotional overeater. On the outside, I was a superstar! On the inside, I was falling apart.
Something had to give…
In my mid 20′s, I had an identity crisis. I had been ‘floundering’ for years and had no idea where to go or how to get there. I began a real process of soul searching. I started practicing yoga and connected with my body for the first time in memory; I could feel my heart beating and the blood in my veins. It was the beginning of an incredible journey! I unleashed my creativity and my eye for style, and began designing jewelry and accessories. I began to uncover the connection between my diet, emotions and health.
The biggest lightbulb of my life went on! I could create my own wellbeing and happiness?!
In that moment, I knew that I had found my life’s calling: To support women everywhere to finally have freedom from emotional eating, so they can live vibrant, healthier, happier lives.
I moved to New York in 2005, and subsequently completed my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, earning accreditation from The American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP) and Teachers College, Columbia University, and founded Nishani Wellness. A few years later, I completed an intensive Healing with Whole Foods training to incorporate eastern foundational healing methods into my practice. 2010 was another year of huge expansion, bringing the completion of my 1-year Coaching training through the Bryan Franklin Coaching Program, and birthing my retreat company, Retreats for Life, into the world.
A perfect reflection of who I am, my Coaching practice bridges the eastern and western traditions with which I was raised, and reflects my passion for wellness and personal empowerment. My mission and intention is to facilitate the empowerment of women – to heal themselves and live with balance and passion, while creating a healthy planet for all of us.
